Hotel Amour

Owned partly by the proprietors of the nightclub Le Baron, this hotel hides in an untouristed, undistinguished lane near Pigalle, Paris’s red-light district. Like Le Baron, the place has become a darling of the international fashion and rock ’n’ roll set. In a cheeky nod to the building’s former tenant — a seedy pay-by-the-hour hotel — many of the Amour’s 20 rooms, some candy colored, contain erotic photography and paperback romances.

Forget a room with a view. The latest hotel trend in Europe is a room with art. In Paris, the graffiti artist Andri Emmanuel, working with Thierry Costes of Costes brothers fame, has just opened the Hotel Amour in the funky 9th Arrondissement area south of Pigalle, now known as SoPi (8, rue Navarin; 33-1-48-78-31-80; www.hotelamour.com). It has a popular courtyard terrace to go with the 20 rooms decorated with works by his artist friends, including the futuristic designer Marc Newson and the conceptual artist Sophie Calle. Doubles start at 90 euros.)
